The Durnin family wouldn’t have it any other way.
With all three starting on the Camdenton baseball team. Freshman Karson plays second base, sophomore Kaden plays first base, and junior Kam plays shortstop. Oh, and dad is the head coach. “I thank God every day for three boys,” said Bryce Durnin, Camdenton head coach.
“Growing up with these two and being coached by my dad, it’s always fun,” said Karson.
“It’s really just a dream come true,” said Kaden. “God’s blessed us in so many ways. Playing catch, playing whiffle ball in the front yard. All that stuff when you’re a little kid kind of pays off right here and we get to do it together on the same field.”
Kam is coming off an All-State season and has committed to play baseball at Wichita State. The team’s leadoff hitter relishes the chance to set an example for his team and his brothers. “Batting first is kind of symbolic to me, leading my brothers,” said Kam.
“A lot of times he’s the one giving advice, telling me about college coaches and college schools,” said Kaden. “And advice about the next level and what it takes. It’s really cool just to have someone right there in your house, right down the hall and you can talk to him.”
And behind these three successful ballplayers and coach is someone else who makes sure things all run smoothly. “I’m not sure why she sticks around,” said Bryce Durnin. “I thank God every day every day for a wife that tolerates the three boys and most of the day four, counting myself.”
“Are you kidding?” said Jill Durnin. “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”
A feeling that helps ease the pain of the food bill.
“You have no idea,” said Jill Durnin, “We always joke we only work for food.”
It’s work that pays off in ways that don’t show up in a budget. But it will show up this season on the field.
“Like, they really are best friends,” said Durnin. “And have been really from the very beginning. So to watch them do something they love together is really very special.”
