The Missouri State Bears are adapting to many new names and faces this year. That presents challenges and a busy summer.
You’ll no longer see Isiaih Mosley or Gaige Prim in a Bears jersey, but you will see Donovan Clay.
“Some people leave, some people go. I still talk to the old people and now I got some new people,” the Bears senior said.
Clay is one of few returners to the team, with more than 11 new players. This is causing the Bear’s summer schedule to change.
“We normally give the guys most of their summer to enjoy it, but this year our guys are going to be here 8-12 weeks. Having so many new guys we felt like we needed to spend a lot of time together,” MSU basketball coach Dana Ford said.
The team is spending a lot of time together on the court.
“Although we’re practicing a lot, it’s a lot of just playing together,” Ford said.
“I feel like that was the purpose of the summer, just getting to know each other, getting to know each other’s game and we’ve done that,” added Clay.
The same is true off the court.
“Trying to get familiar with one another, and I think that’s very critical when you have so many new guys,” Ford said.
Another challenge for the Bears is connecting the community to the new players. One way to do that is by hosting a meet and greet.
“It is definitely new and I like it. I like talking to the community and getting to meet new people,” said Clay.
“It is our obligation to show our gratitude and appreciation, spending time with others. Your time is your most valuable asset and I really think spending time with others not only teaches our guys a valuable lesson but also gives a great experience for everyone involved,” said Ford.
Missouri State is hosting another meet and greet Thursday.
