Kickapoo claims Class 5 silver medal with loss to Lafayette

The Kickapoo volleyball team finished as state runner-up in Class 5 after a four-set loss (19-25, 26-24, 10-25, 18-25) to Lafayette on Saturday.

Kickapoo got off to a strong start in set one by scoring the first four points and eight of the first 11 to take an 8-3 lead. Lafayette responded with a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish on the way to a 25-19 set one victory.

Kickapoo responded well in the second set by using a 5-0 run to take an early 7-5 lead on Lafayette. The Lady Chiefs extended the lead to as many as five at 16-11 before Lafayette fought back and tied the match at 24-24. Kickapoo scored the final two points to claim the set and tie the match.

It was all Lafayette in the third and fourth sets. The Lancers used an 11-0 run in the middle of the third set to build a commanding 19-5 lead on the way to a 25-10 set victory. Lafayette never trailed in the fourth and final set to finish off the state championship win.

Bella Faria led Kickapoo with 11 kills. She also contributed 18 digs. Reagan Greenway led the team in assists with 15. Kya Johnson led Kickapoo with 33 digs.

The Lady Chiefs finish the season 31-9 overall.
