Hermitage girls basketball will look for new players to step up offensively
By Chris Parker
Hermitage girls basketball hasn’t won double-digit games since going 25-4 in the 2017-18 season.
This year’s team will look to break that streak coming off a nine-win season.
“Though we have had a few down years lately, I believe we are on the right track to be a competitive team and have lots of young players that have tons of potential,” Hermitage head coach Shane Salmon said. “It will be up to all of us to transform that potential into good play on the court.”
Senior Grace Newman and junior Izzy Sabala will be team leaders this year.
Newman is a guard who averaged 2.8 points and 1.5 assists per game as a junior.
“Grace Newman works hard in practice and is a smart basketball player,” Salmon said. “She just does lots of little thing to help the team and is involved is several school organizations and hold leadership roles in them.”
Sabala is the team’s leading returning scorer and rebounder after she averaged 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
“Izzy Sabala is a smart basketball player, handles the ball and can shoot the three well,” Salmon said. “We will need her to take on more scoring and leadership responsibilities this year, but I feel she is ready to do that. Very good student and holds leadership positions in organizations at school.”

Seniors Meagan Nickerson and Lexi Rife along with sophomores Taylor Hohmann, Chloe Friedman and Hailey Harris also return.
Junior Ampara Payne will join the team for the first time. Freshman Chloe Clemmer will look to make an immediate impact on the varsity level.
Hermitage graduated all-conference selection Chelsi Horn off last year’s team. Horn led the team with 14.5 points per game. Replacing her offensive production will be key.
“Scoring will be the thing that we need to work on,” Salmon said. “We will need everyone to step up this year and work together to find ways to score more points.”
Hermitage opens the season on Nov. 18 at home against Miami.
