Matt Brownsberger enters the first year of his second stint as head coach of the Warsaw boys basketball program this season. Brownsberger previously served as head coach of the Wildcats from 2004-07.

He takes over a team that won two games last season and hasn’t won double-digit games since 2018-19.

Senior Tayten Boyer will be a key leader this year. He averaged 4.1 points and 5 rebounds per game last year.

“We will rely heavily on Senior Tayten Boyer for leadership,” Brownsberger said. “He is a natural leader who helps get the most out of his teammates.”

Sophomore Garrett Ferguson and junior Riley Taylor are two players who have also shown the ability to be leaders. Ferguson scored 5.2 ppg with 4 rebounds per game last season. Taylor was the team’s leading scorer as a sophomore with 9.5 points per game.

Sophomores Josh Bunch, Jayce DePreist and Shane Poyser all return after seeing time starting last season. DePriest led that group in scoring at 6.1 ppg.

Sophomore Logan Gemes is a sophomore move in from Otterville who will bring good shooting and defense to the team.

“I think we have the chance to be a good defensive team. We will be a little undersized, but I think athletically we could cause some issues for some teams,” Brownsberger said. “We really struggled scoring last season. I think if we can improve shot selection, that we should be better.”

Warsaw opens the season on Nov. 22 at home against Concordia.

“We are going to be a team that hopefully is known as a tough defensive team,” Brownsberger said. “After a two-win season, we want to become a team that teams are not looking forward to playing.”
