Lamar erases 11-point first-quarter deficit to beat Clever in district quarterfinals

No. 2 seed Lamar found itself in trouble after one quarter against No. 7 Clever trailing by 11 at 16-5. The Tigers won the next three quarters to take the game 61-53.

After that slow start, Lamar outscored Clever 16-10 in the second quarter to cut Clever’s lead to 26-21 at the half. Lamar took over the lead after three quarters with a 38-37 lead. The Tigers posted a 23-16 advantage in the fourth quarter on the strength of shooting 14-for-18 from the free throw line.

Ian Ngugi led the Lamar attack with 19 total points. Austin Wilkerson scored nine of his 10 points in the fourth quarter for Lamar including six from the free throw line. Talon Timmons (11 points) and Alex Wilkerson (11 points) also scored in double figures for Lamar.

Brayden Verch led Clever with 15 points.

Lamar will face Southwest in the Class 3 District 12 semifinals at 7:30 pm on Wednesday in Diamond.
