Wheatland upsets Humansville in low-scoring district semifinal

Third seeded Wheatland took down No. 2 Humansville in a low-scoring affair to advance to the Class 1 District 5 semfinals.

The Mules carried a 13-12 lead into the half. A 9-5 third-quarter advantage for Wheatland extended the lead to 22-17 with one quarter remaining. That lead would hold up against a 10-7 charge by Humansville in the final quarter.

The win was the second in three tries for Wheatland against Humansville. The Mules won the first matchup of the season 43-33 in the Humansville Tournament. Humansville got Wheatland 59-54 in the regular season matchup on Feb. 14.

Andrew Murphy (13 points), Davin Sawyer (11 points) and Dan Murphy (5 points) accounted for all of Wheatland’s scoring. Humansville was led by 11 points from Kade White.

Wheatland advances to face another Polk County League rival in Dadeville for the Class 1 District 5 championship at 6 pm on Friday in Wheatland.

Dadeville beat Wheatland 48-40 in the regular season matchup on Jan. 20.
