Southwest upsets Stockton for first district title in 57 years

No. 3 seed Southwest boys basketball upset No. 1 seed Stockton to claim the program’s first district title in 57 years.

The Trojans got off to a slow start trailing 12-6 after one quarter and 21-18 at the half. Southwest tied the game at 36-36 heading into the fourth quarter where the Trojans went off. They outscored Stockton 20-6 in the deciding frame to claim a 56-42 win and the Class 3 District 12 title.

Southwest’s second-half rally coincided with Zak Corwin getting going. He scored all of his team-high 17 points in the second half including 11 of Southwest’s 20 fourth-quarter points.

Lucas Paulsen and Brendyn Paulsen scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Jay Baxter led Stockton with a game-high 25 points in the loss.

Southwest will face Sparta at 7:45 pm on Monday in Carthage in the Class 3 state sectional round.
