SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The young roster of the Drury Panthers won accolades from the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Wednesday as Logan Applegate was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year in a vote of league coaches. It marks the first time since 2010 a Drury player has won the award.
In addition, Brock Wakefield, a sophomore in his first season with the Panthers, was named to the GLVC All-Defensive Team.
Applegate won the league’s Freshman of the Year after leading all GLVC Freshman in points per game (13.3) and steals (34). The Nevada, Missouri native is the second Panther ever to win GLVC Freshman of the Year and the first since Alex Hall won the award in 2010. Applegate was the only unanimous selection to the GLVC All-Freshman team after ranking top-10 in the GLVC in free-throw percentage (.831) and three-point field goals made (67).
Wakefield, a sophomore from Annapolis, Missouri, was named to the GLVC All-Defensive team. A transfer from The Citadel, Wakefield finished second in the GLVC in steals (44) and steals per game (1.6). He played and started in 27 games and averaged 8.1 points, and was Drury’s second-leading rebounder with 4.8 boards per game.
Drury completed their second season under head coach Chris Foster and featured 13 newcomers and nine freshmen, six of whom were redshirts during the 2022-23 season.
