Upon the retirement of Phil Karr after more than 25 years in Salem baseball and softball, the Lady Tigers have welcomed a new coach: Erin Wilson.

Wilson is a Rolla native and in her second year of teaching in Salem. She is currently coaching the basketball cheer squad in addition to softball.

Wilson played competitive softball and also coached gymnastics since age 16. “Softball was one of my first loves,” she said, “and I’m excited to get back to the game and to be coaching again.”

The Lady Tigers have kicked off their season with tryouts and practices. Wilson and assistant coach Bekah Hayes, who returns from assisting last year’s team, are ready to put in the work with their new team. “We have been working to learn the girls and to see where the gaps are, and what issues need to be addressed. We are forming a game plan for the season.”

Coach Wilson said Ashton Bowers will return as starting pitcher for the Lady Tigers. Olivia Hensley will likely be in the outfield along with Delaney Owen. Kyleigh Wood could contribute at second base and outfield. Brooke Mahurin will likely cover third or first base, and Alexis White shortstop.

“We are still playing things out and testing,” said Wilson.

The Lady Tigers will miss senior Savannah Manthey, former third baseman and power hitter, who shifted to track when the softball season moved to spring; Manthey earned all-state recognition in the javelin.

“We are just getting started,” said Coach Wilson. “I don’t want to fail these girls.”

Salem will kick off their season with a home opener against Ellington on March 21.
