When watching Rogersville girls soccer, you might think you’re seeing double, because you are.
Nikki and Kita Wood were turning heads on the field even before high school.
“I knew that there was something coming up, I wasn’t sure exactly what I just knew that they were good. This has kind of blown me away,” said Rogersville Soccer Coach Brett Wubbena.
The pandemic canceled their freshmen season, but since then the two sisters have taken off.
“We get a lot of goals from them, and we get a lot of assists from them,” Wubbena said.
“She’s my assister,” said Nikki. “This year I think I’m going to give her a lot of assists so we kind of just balance each other out everywhere we go.”
Nikki is chasing the school record for all-time goals, needing roughly 20 in her senior season.
“She could run through a wall, she’s just a strong player you can’t knock her down. Her shot is fierce,” Wubbena said.
“She has really good ball handling skills, she has really good foot skills, she can shoot from anywhere,” Kita said.
While Kita is eyeing the school record for single-season assists, missing it by one as a sophomore.
“Kita’s very controlled, and quiet, but she’ll place the ball instead of just hit the ball,” Wubbena said.
“She will get the ball and never get it taken from her, she’s like a rock if you run into her, you’re going to bounce off,” Nikki added.
When these two get together, they’re hard to stop.
“We’ve actually changed the way that we do some things because they always know where each other are,” Wubbena said.
“It’s almost like you don’t have to look up, you just know where she is,” Kita said.
There’s a name for that, “It’s like we have twin telepathy,” Kita added.
“We know where we are going to be, we can read each other’s minds basically,” Nikki said.
“It is nice to have that because they know each other so well, and they know when they are screwing up. Before I say something, they have already probably said it,” Wubbena said.
However, no season is complete without a little sibling rivalry.
“This year is just different; I’m going to be the one scoring the goals she’s going to be the assister,” Kita said.
“No, we’re still arguing about that we’ll see what happens,” Nikki replied.
We’ll let their play decide that, as they both look to have historic senior seasons.
