Athlete of the Week: Brylee Brewster, Warsaw softball

The Warsaw Lady Cats have big goals on the diamond this season.

To achieve those goals, the team will look to an underclassman who can do it all on the field.

“She commands her pitches very well and she works ahead on batters,” said Warsaw Softball Coach Kelli Eierman.

Sophomore Brylee Brewster is Warsaw’s go-to pitcher.

“She never lets anything shake her, she’s always going to pitch the same whether she’s winning or losing,” Eierman said.

Coach Kelli Eierman knows what it takes to be a successful pitcher, as Brylee has tied Eierman’s school record for most strikeouts in a game at 20. That’s every batter but one.

“She’s really good at hitting her spots,” said Warsaw freshman Tanna Howe.

Nobody knows Brylee’s skill better than the Howe sisters. Taylor, who now plays at Evansville, caught for Brylee last year.

“She was like one of my best friends,” Brylee Brewster said about Taylor.

Now, Taylor’s younger sister, Tanna, has taken on the role this season after catching for Brylee in middle school.

“She’s definitely progressed in skill and hitting pitches,” Tanna said. “It’s definitely different from catching in middle school but it’s really fun.”

“I think that I’ve gained more confidence in myself on the mound and I feel like my pitches I have perfected them a little more and they’re more accurate,” Brylee added.

That dominance shows as she’s led the Lady Cats to an 8-2 start to the season. Brylee also helps out on offense too.

“She provides us with a lot of power, we always trust her when she’s up to bat we know she’s going to do something. She helps us out both on offense and defense,” Eierman said.

With that skill, Brylee’s hoping to lead Warsaw on a deep postseason run.

“I feel like we can get really far this season and I hope to win a state title soon,” Brylee said.
