Visiting Missouri scored nine runs in the final four innings Tuesday evening at Hammons Field to pull away to a 10-1 victory in game one of this season’s home-and-home series that continues next week in Columbia.
The Bears (16-15) trailed 1-0 after five frames as Brandt Thompson tossed a scoreless first and Tyler Tscherter allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts in four strong innings.
The Tigers (21-11) plated three runs in the sixth with a two-out rally that began with a solo home run and continued with a hit batter and RBI triple, and the third run touched home before the third out was recorded on a double steal attempt to make it 4-0.
Anthony Socci hit a solo home run in the seventh to make it 4-1 with the Bears’ lone run of the day, while Spencer Nivens and Zack Stewart both went 2-for-4 and Nivens doubled twice in front of a season-high 2,787 fans.
Missouri responded to Socci’s homer with a leadoff homer in the eighth, added another run in that inning and then four more in an eventful ninth for the final margin.
The Bears hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Missouri Valley Conference newcomer UIC. Game times in Chicago are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
