Missouri State drops midweek game to in-state rival Missouri

Visiting Missouri scored nine runs in the final four innings Tuesday evening at Hammons Field to pull away to a 10-1 victory in game one of this season’s home-and-home series that continues next week in Columbia.The Bears (16-15) trailed 1-0 after five frames as Brandt Thompson tossed a scoreless first and Tyler Tscherter allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts in four strong innings.The Tigers (21-11) plated three runs in the sixth with a two-out rally that began with a solo home run and continued with a hit batter and RBI triple, and the third run touched home before the third out was recorded on a double steal attempt to make it 4-0.Anthony Socci hit a solo home run in the seventh to make it 4-1 with the Bears’ lone run of the day, while Spencer Nivens and Zack Stewart both went 2-for-4 and Nivens doubled twice in front of a season-high 2,787 fans.Missouri responded to Socci’s homer with a leadoff homer in the eighth, added another run in that inning and then four more in an eventful ninth for the final margin.The Bears hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Missouri Valley Conference newcomer UIC. Game times in Chicago are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
