SBU hosted 20 area Class 4-5 programs on Monday. The Waynesville boys and Kickapoo girls came away with the team titles.

Blake, relays lead Waynesville boys

Waynesville won four relay and two individual events on the way to 105.5 points and the team title.

Jayzen Blake swept the hurdle events to claim the two individual titles. He won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.33, which bested runner-up Mamady Embola from Ozark’s time of 15.53.

In the 300 hurdles, Blake overcame an early deficit to run a personal best time of 40.44 and win the race. Nixa’s Gideon Carter finished runner-up in 40.55.

“(Going into) the 300 (hurdles) I did not feel good at all. I prayed and said just try your hardest. The guy was beating me, and I said ‘(no), I had to get him’. Boom. New PR, I do believe,” Blake said. “In the 110’s, I took first last year, so I had to take first again this year.”

Blake continues to lower personal records, but it is the school’s records he is chasing. The Waynesville hurdle records have stood since 2009.

“I run as fast as I can because I want my name to be on that school record board, so I have to put in that work,” Blake said.

The rest of the championship medals belonged to relay teams. The 3200-meter relay team just missed out on breaking the eight-minute barrier in a time of 8:00.10. Each leg got faster for Waynesville going 2:01.87-2:01.50-1:59.91-1:56.84.

The sprint relays then went to work with the 4×200 running 1:29.66 and the 4×100 clocking 42.99. The 4×400 relay finished off the meet with a dominant 3:24.98, which was almost six seconds faster than runner-up Kickapoo.

Kickapoo girls claim team title

The Kickapoo girls posted four first-place and nine total top three finishes on the way to a team championship with 92 points. Republic finished runner-up at 82 points.

University of Kansas signee Taylor Mayo swept the horizontal jumps winning the long jump at 18’0.5 and the triple jump at 37’8. Both victories were dominant for Mayo with a 16.5-inch win in the long jump and a more than two-foot win in the triple jump.

Parker Papa won gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.30. She also finished third in the 200-meter dash.

The 3200-meter relay team was the final gold medalist running a time of 9:54.10.

Dickerson runs away with 100-meter dash title

Camdenton’s Angel Dickerson is not used to trailing when he runs 100-meter dashes, and Monday was no different. Dickerson ran a 10.96 into a headwind to easily win the 100-meter dash over runner-up William Wolfe from Webb City who ran 11.38.

Competition like SBU brings out the best in Dickerson.

“Whenever it comes to running against guys who are almost as fast as me or faster than me, it makes me go way faster,” Dickerson said. “Whenever it comes to me running against guys who aren’t near as fast, I am just running with myself, and I don’t run as fast. I really like competition.”

Dickerson also finished runner-up in the long jump to Republic’s Zion Allen. Allen jumped 22’0.75 to win the event, which was just ahead of Dickerson’s 21’11. Allen also won the high jump with a height of 6’2.75.

Cantwell continues dominant freshman season

Nixa’s Jackson Cantwell easily swept the discus and shot put on Monday. His first throw of the day in the discus proved to be the best at 184’6. That mark bested fellow Nixa freshman Hayden Mays’ runner-up throw of 158’12.

In shot put, all four of Cantwell’s throws were good enough to win the event, but his final throw was his best at 60’7.75.

Missouri State football signee Caden Wiest finished runner-up in shot put at 54’6. Wiest pulled off the rare feat of finishing top two in shot put and winning a sprint event. He took the 200-meter dash title in a time of 22.83.

Four other girls win two individual events

Carl Junction’s Sydney Ward, Webb City’s Abigail Street, Glendale’s Aryah Moore and Bolivar’s Dailyn VanDeren each brought home two individual gold medals on Monday.

Ward made her case as the fastest sprinter in southwest Missouri with a sweep of the 100 and 200. She went 12.29 in the 100 and 25.70 in the 200. She is the current state leader for Class 4 in the 200. Her time of 12.29 in the 100 is .21 behind the current Class 4 lead.

Street dominated the distance events, winning the 1600 and 3200. Her 1600-meter time of 5:10.70 is the new Class 4 leader. She followed that up with a time of 11:07.91 in the 3200.

Moore won her gold medals in the hurdles. She was the only runner to break 16 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles finishing with a time of 15.84. The 300-meter hurdles were a little closer with her time of 47.43 just beating out West Plains’ Audrey Oliver’s finish time of 47.74.

VanDeren came from behind to win both the shot and discus.

In the shot put, VanDeren was sitting in fifth place heading into her final throw. She unleased a monster throw of 38’0.75 to go from trailing the leader by over a foot to winning the competition by almost two feet.

In the discus, VanDeren’s first throw had her sitting sixth in the competition. Her second throw traveled 112’5 and held up for the rest of the competition to give VanDeren her second gold medal of the day.
