2023 Fall Preview: Greenfield Football

Greenfield football won three games last season and returns four starters on both sides of the ball this season.

Alex Pickett and Nash McGuire will be two key running backs for Greenfield. Pickett earned all-district honors last season.

“Alex Pickett had a very good summer of training. He is physical on both sides of the ball,” Greenfield head coach Jeremy Neville said. “Nash McGuire had a very good summer of training. He will be difficult to tackle in space and will play both sides of the ball.”

Hudson McGuire and Andrew Mays will also see carries.

Austin Pickett and Drake Morrison are both in the mix for snaps are quarterback. Austin Pickett earned all-district honors as a sophomore.

“Austin Pickett is a dual threat quarterback,” Neville said. “He has worked hard to improve footwork, make quicker reads, and understand the playbook. He is poised for a big season.”

Nik Gossett is poised for a big season a wide receiver.

“Nik Gossett has big play ability at the receiver position,” Neville said.

Wade Jones and Devin Steeley will also be at wide receiver.

River Stevens brings versatility to the tight end position.

“River Stevens is a versatile athlete with good size,” Neville said. “We will utilize him in creative ways offensively as a blocker and tight end.”

Jaxin Knotts will also see snaps at tight end.

The offensive line will feature Xander Vaughn, Zach Boyd and Skyler Moller. Vaughn earned all-district honors last season.

On defense, Boyd, Stevens, Knotts, Vaughn, Jonathon Schmidt and Shelby Hurd will be on the defensive line. Alex Pickett, Nash McGuire, Hudson McGuire and Devin Steeley will be the linebackers. The secondary will feature Gossett, Austin Pickett, Jones, Mays and Drake Morrison.

Greenfield will travel to Jasper for a jamboree on Aug. 18 with the host Eagles, Lockwood and Liberal. Greenfield opens the regular season on Aug. 25 at home against Appleton City.

“I am hoping to bring in a new approach to the Greenfield Football Program,” Neville said. “I really believe in preparation, work ethic, intelligence, pride, and resilience. I hope we can demonstrate a respect for the sport and our opponents as we compete at a high level. I want to help develop young men into better people and simultaneously raise our level of play on the field. We will focus on being a physical football team with attention to detail. Greenfield has tradition with some excellent football teams of the past. I want the program to return to that high level of play and stay there consistently. Every game on our schedule will be the biggest game of the year as we navigate the challenges of becoming a consistently successful football team.”
