McDonald County softball enjoyed a successful season in 2022.

The Mustangs posted a 23-10 record, falling to eventual Class 4 champion Kearney in the state quarterfinal round.

Key returnees for McDonald County this season include a quartet of seniors in third baseman Jacie Frencken (.510 BA), shortstop Carlee Copper (.402 BA), second baseman Natalie Gillming (.278 BA) and outfielder Katelynn Townsend (.255 BA).

Heading into his fourth season at the helm, head coach Heath Alumbaugh also expects a host of varsity newcomers to compete for playing time, including infielder Kylie Brooks, infielder Kaidence Willis, outfielder Natlie Nunez, outfielder Anissa Ramirez, utility Jaylee Brock and utility Vivianne Latham.

“Our expectations are to compete at a very high level every day when we step on the field,” Alumbaugh said. “I think the biggest difference maker of us in district play will be our experience and senior leadership.”

With plenty of flexibility throughout the lineup, Alumbaugh believes his team is primed for another successful season barring injuries.

“We have a lot of girls that have played a lot throughout their high school career,” Alumbaugh said. “The biggest challenge we will have to overcome is the ability to stay healthy throughout the season.”

McDonald County opens its season Aug. 26 at home against Quapaw.
