Winona volleyball returns just two varsity players from last season’s 29-win team that finished third place in Class 1.

The two returning players are both sophomores in Lexi Lindsey and Taylor Williams.

Lindsey earned all-state honors as a freshman with 1,202 assists. She was second on the team in digs with 353. Williams will move from the pin to the middle this season. She had 91 kills while leading the team in serve receptions with 407.

Three seniors in Braden Harring, Bree Naber and Diana Romeo all have experience on the volleyball court.

“All three girls have played at least two years of high school volleyball, so we’re thrilled to have them back and get back to a volleyball grind,” Winona head coach Jordan Denning said.

Sophie Kile will also be back in the lineup.

“Our volleyball IQ and court awareness will be strong this season. We lack a lineup of power hitters, so we’ve put in a ton of work this summer attacking the gaps and becoming defensively sound,” Denning said. “Having several new athletes back on the team means we are not a team that has played together very much, so communication will be key for us.”

Winona will travel to Eminence on Aug. 22 for a jamboree before opening the season on Aug. 28 at Salem.

“A goal for our team this year is to continue to grow, enjoy the season, and finish with a 3rd district championship in a row.
