After the Rogersville soccer team made back-to-back district championship appearances, two Wildcats are keeping that momentum going into this year. An effort for Stewart McDonald and Brady Goodson to cap off their senior season in a sweet way.
Stewart led the Wildcats last season in goals, but his versatility makes an even bigger impact on the team
“We have had him play pretty much every position,” said Rogersville Head Soccer Coach Brett Wubbena. “He creates so much more than he scores, we have put him in a scoring role. I think he is still more comfortable distributing and being a playmaker.”
Brady on the other hand, makes minimal saves because of the Wildcat’s heavy presence up field, but don’t mistake his lack of work with a lack of ability.
“Brady is such a comfort in the back because I know how good he is,” Wubbena said. “People don’t because they don’t see him in action. But he is a good presence in the back, he talks to the backs keeps them organized. Gives me a little peace knowing he is back there.”
These two all-state players lead the way for their Cats, but they refuse to take all the credit.
“Everybody needs to have everybody,” Brady said. “Me and Stewart didn’t do this just ourselves, We had our team to do it with us.”
“We can move the ball,” Stewart said. “I mean they make me look good. It’s not myself for sure.”
They say their team’s play style is like ice cream.
“Vanilla is really good and that is just the base,” Stewart said. “We want to be more than just the base and so we want to add the toppings and we want to do all the other stuff.”
Wubbena described how the toppings translate on the soccer field as.
“Being creative and making some runs. Just find pockets. See if you can either create or take space. Just do something and see the game differently.”
The athletes of the week picked the toppings that fit their team best.
“We are all the toppings honestly, especially when we are moving it good out there,” Stewart said. “I mean we are M&Ms, we’re Reese’s, we’re cookie dough. Cookie dough that’s the best for sure.”
“Sprinkles,” Brady said. “I feel like we’re all different in our aspects but we come together and it tastes pretty good.”
And with this duo leading the way, the cherry on top of the sundae may just be a trip to state.
