Halfway girls basketball returns three players from last season and will rely on a host of freshmen for depth.

“Being young I just want us to compete in every game and learn to be one team who trust each other in game time,” Halfway head coach Amber Cline said.

Tessa Cline, Rae Spear and Hannah Maggard are the three returning players.

“She (Tessa Cling) brings game IQ and all around asset from all parts of the floor. She can bring the ball down or be our big. She was our leading scorer last year until a season ending injury,” Coach Cline said. “Junior Rae Spear returns. We will be looking at her in a different position this year. She will be transitioning to a center. She brings a good shot and is very good at seeing steals on the back side of our defense. Sophomore Hannah Maggard will bring her quickness and aggressiveness on defense.”

Raeghan Timmerman, Madi Doke, MaryGrace Cline and Ashlyn McCarthy are four of the freshmen who will look to make varsity impacts.

This group will have to rely on speed to overcome a lack of size on the roster.

“Our overall speed and quickness (will be strengths). We are also a very good defensive team. We have many girls who can shoot when called on,” Coach Cline said. “We are fast but small. We will have to come up with ways to handle the size we may face. We are also young, only two juniors and no seniors.”

Halfway opens the season Nov. 20-22 at the Fair Play Tournament.
