Miller escapes upset-minded Wheaton with big fourth quarter

No. 7 seed Miller came from behind to beat upset-minded No. 10 seed Wheaton 43-39 in the opening round of the Walnut Grove Holiday Tournament on Friday.

Wheaton jumped out to a 15-10 lead after one quarter and 23-21 lead at the half. The Bulldogs extended the lead heading into the fourth quarter taking at 34-30 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Miller clamped down defensively in the final frame on the way to a 13-5 advantage in the quarter and 43-39 win.

Leading scorer Jarod Lung kept Miller in the game in the first half with 10 of Miller’s 21 points including three 3-pointers. He finished with a game-high 16 points scoring his final six points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Wheaton was led by Zander Dutra with 10 points.

Miller advances to face No. 2 seed Lamar in the quarterfinals at 3 pm on Saturday in Walnut Grove. Wheaton will play No. 15 seed Verona in the consolation quarterfinals at 6 pm on Saturday in Morrisville at Marion C. Early High School.
