Ngugi scores 25 points to lead Lamar past Verona

Lamar looked every bit of a No. 2 seed in an 82-43 win over 15 seed Verona to open the Walnut Grove Holiday Tournament on Friday.

The Tigers blitzed Wildcats out of the gate scoring 25 points in the first quarter and 30 in the second to carry a 55-22 lead into the break.

Ian Ngugi scored 12 points in the first quarter for Lamar on his way to 25-points output to tie for the game-high. All 25 points were scored in the first three quarters of action.

Chase Querry added 17 points for Lamar. The Tigers were balanced after that with six other players scoring between three and eight points.

As a team, Lamar hit six three pointers with Ngugi and Wilkerson each accounting for two apiece.

Verona was led by Jessy Gamel’s 25-point output.

Lamar advances to face No. 7 seed Miller in the quarterfinals at 3 pm on Saturday in Walnut Grove. Verona will play No. 10 seed Wheaton in the consolation quarterfinals at 6 pm on Saturday in Morrisville at Marion C. Early High School.
