ST. LOUIS – Lacy Stokes of Missouri State women’s basketball has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for her performance in the Lady Bear Classic last week, the league announced today (Dec. 27). The honor marks her second consecutive MVC Newcomer of the Week award and her third of the season.
Stokes helped the Lady Bears earn two wins over BYU and Western Kentucky, leading MSU in points per game (14.5), assists (6), steals (4) and free throws made (9) across the two-game span.
In MSU’s victory over BYU, Stokes scored a game-high 13 points while dishing out three assists, grabbing two rebounds and collecting a steal as the Lady Bears secured a win over a Power Five opponent for the 11th consecutive season.
On Thursday against Western Kentucky, Stokes led the team with 16 points, three assists and three steals. Ten of her 16 points came in the second half, which included the junior going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe with a couple of crucial free throws down the stretch to help keep the Lady Bears out in front.
Stokes, a first-year Lady Bear, is pacing MSU this season with 12.2 points per game, 33 assists and 16 steals, and she owns a team-leading seven double-figure scoring performances. Missouri State has won its last three games and its last seven at Great Southern Bank Arena.
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 30 as they welcome Northern Iowa to begin conference action. Tipoff against the Panthers is set for 1 p.m. at Great Southern Bank Arena in Springfield.
