ST. LOUIS – Lacy Stokes of Missouri State women’s basketball has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the seventh time this season, the league announced today (Feb. 20).
Stokes led the way for Missouri State last week as the Lady Bears went 2-0 with road wins over Indiana State and Evansville. She averaged a team-leading 16.0 points per game while also adding 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game. She shot .435 from the field and .857 from the free throw line, leading the team in both free throws made (12) and attempts (14) across the two games.
In Thursday night’s win at Indiana State, Stokes scored 13 points, tied for the game high in both assists (4) and steals (3). She also went 5-for-6 at the free throw line in 39 minutes against the Sycamores. After trailing by one heading into the fourth at ISU, Stokes scored a game-leading six points in the fourth period as MSU came from behind to win.
In Saturday afternoon’s victory over Evansville, Stokes was MSU’s leading scorer after pouring in 19 points on 50 percent (6-12) shooting from the field and an .875 (7-8) mark at the free throw line. She also collected a game-leading three steals against the Aces.
Stokes continues to rank second in the MVC in assists per game (4.6) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.4). She owns 15 double-figure scoring performances this season and leads MSU on the season in scoring (11.2 points/game), assists (105) and steals (46).
This marks her seventh MVC Newcomer of the Week award this season. Her other six honors came on Dec. 4, Dec. 18, Dec. 27, Jan. 9, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6.
Missouri State will travel to face Drake on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m., before returning home on Sunday, Feb. 25 to take on Southern Illinois at 2 p.m.
