Cabool overcomes slow start to upset top-seeded Van Buren in C2D2 title game

Cabool overcame a slow start to upset top-seeded Van Buren on Saturday.

Van Buren jumped out to a 10-5 lead after one quarter.

Cabool regrouped in the break and came out on fire in the second quarter with a 22-10 advantage to take a 27-20 lead into the half. Cabool continued to press the advantage in the second half on the way to a 60-45 win.

Josh Shockley was the engine driving the Cabool offensive machine in the second quarter scoring 14 of the team’s 22 points. Shockley finished with a game-high 22 points. Trey Atkins was also in double figures for Cabool with 15 points.

Nathan Smith led Van Buren with 17 points.

It is the first district title for Cabool since at least 2008 when MSHSAA started keeping records online.

The Bulldogs will host South Pemiscot in the Class 2 sectional round on Tuesday.
