Mt. Vernon and East Newton advance to Class 4 District 12 semifinals

East Newton and Mt. Vernon advanced to the Class 4 District 12 semifinals with wins in the opening round on Monday night.

No. 5 seed East Newton started the night out with an upset of No. 4 Cassville 42-33. Cassville was in control early with a 13-7 lead after one quarter and a 16-12 lead at the half. East Newton came out firing in the second half with an 18-11 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game. The Patriots outscored Cassville 12-6 in the final quarter to ice the game.

Brooklyn Blanchard scored 13 points for East Newton to lead all scorers. Audrey Kennedy scored 12 points to lead Cassville.

East Newton will face No. 1 seed Aurora in the semifinal round on 6 pm on Thursday. Aurora beat East Newton in two regular season matchups.

Host Mt. Vernon jumped out to a 25-5 lead after one quarter and rolled to a 68-25 win over Seneca.

Cheyenne Bieber paced Mt. Vernon with 25 points as nine different Mt. Vernon players scored in the win.

No. 3 Mt. Vernon advances to face No. 2 Monett on Thursday at 7:30 pm. Monett beat Mt. Vernon 50-43 on Feb. 12.
