There was only one upset in the opening round of the Class 6 District 5 girls basketball tournament on Wednesday night with No. 5 Ozark upsetting No. 4 Glendale 44-42.

Top-seeded Kickapoo opened up the tournament with a 67-29 win over Central. The Lady Chiefs jumped out to a 25-1 lead after one quarter and didn’t look back. Kya Johnson led Kickapoo with 19 points. Allison Scott (15 points) and Mikayla Pilley (14 points) were also in double figures for Kickapoo.

Central was led by 19 points from Talia Dyson.

Ozark used a furious fourth-quarter comeback to upset No. 4 seed, and host, Glendale 44-42. Glendale was in control after one quarter with a 14-8 lead. Ozark cut that lead to one point at the half at 22-21. Out of the break, Glendale pressed its advantage out to four at 34-30. In the fourth quarter, Ozark outscored Glendale 14-8 to secure the win.

Sydney Hampton was key for Ozark throughout but even more so in the fourth quarter as she scored eight of the team’s eight points in the quarter. She finished with a game-high 24 points.

Mattie Zingg led Glendale with 14 points. Avery Givens was just behind her with 13 points.

Kickapoo and Ozark will tip off in the district semifinal round at 5:30 pm on Friday at Glendale.

The last two games of the night were both dominant victories for the higher seeds.

Republic opened up a 23-6 lead on Willard after one quarter and a 40-7 lead at the half on the way to a 60-34 win. Republic had 10 different players score led by Misora Nambara with 15 points and Molly Blades with 13 points.

Nixa’s offense seemingly couldn’t miss no matter who was taking the shot in a 96-52 win over Lebanon. The Lady Eagles scored 23 points in each of the first two quarters and 34 points in the third quarter alone.

Brooke Teter led Nixa and all scorers with 29 points.

Nixa and Republic will meet for a third time this season at 8 pm on Saturday at Glendale in the district semifinals. Republic won both games by a combined three points.
