ST. LOUIS – Lacy Stokes of Missouri State women’s basketball has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the eighth time this season, the league announced today (March 5).
Stokes led the way for Missouri State as she helped the Lady Bears to wins over Bradley and Illinois State. Stokes averaged 19.0 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game, while shooting .733 (11-15) from the field and .750 (15-20) from the charity stripe across the two victories.
In Thursday night’s win over Bradley, Stokes had a game-high 12 points (2-2 FG, 8-9 FT) and three steals to go with three assists in just under 20 minutes on the court. In Saturday’s crucial win against Illinois State, Stokes scored a season-high 26 points (9-13 FG, 1-2 3FG, 7-11 FT), tied her career high with 7 steals and dished out a game-high 7 assists without leaving the floor against the Redbirds. According to HerHoopStats, Stokes is one of just three players in NCAA Division I this season to post a stat line of 26 points, 7 assists and 7 steals in a game.
The junior point guard owns 17 double-figure scoring performances, has led MSU in assists 24 times this season and averages a team-leading 11.6 points per game on the year. She ranks second in the MVC in assists/game (4.5) and fourth in steals/game (2.2), both of which rank 71st nationally.
This marks Stokes’ eighth weekly newcomer honor this season with her previous awards coming on Dec. 4, Dec. 18, Dec. 27, Jan. 9, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and Feb. 20.
Missouri State closes out the regular season this week with a pair of road contests. The Lady Bears take on UIC on Thursday, March 7 with tipoff in Chicago set for 7 p.m.
