Gainesville softball has a new head coach in Ashley Comstock.
She inherits a team that won double digit games for the first time since the Lady Bulldogs started spring softball in 2013.
“This is my first year coaching softball at Gainesville, but I see a lot of potential in the girls,” Comstock said. “They are all excited and motivated to win games this year.”
Seniors Mackenzie Avalia and Emory Warden along with junior Katelyn Morgan will be team leaders.
“Our seniors, Mackenzie Avalia and Emory Warden will step into the leadership role this year. Avalia is extremely versatile and can play anywhere on the field from behind the plate, on the mound, but will most likely occupy shortstop and third base. Warden will most likely play behind the plate but can easily play any infield position. She has a lot of confidence and she’s got a great bat. Also, our pitcher, junior Katelyn Morgan will be a key leader this season. She plays softball year round and is really dedicated to the game,” Comstock said.
Freshman Lakely Anderson could also see time pitching. Warden is the most likely option at catcher but her sister, sophomore Hadley Warden, could also find her way behind the plate at catcher.
Junior Emma McGinnis along with sophomores Lilly Winrod, Andrea Winrod and Hadley Warden will compete for time on the infield.
Mattie Cooley will anchor the outfield in center. Flanking her will be a combination of McGinnis, Jessika Chriswell, Kelsie Hogan, Anderson and Kylie Weatherford.
“The biggest strength this season is our versatility. We have a lot of girls that can play anywhere on the field,” Comstock said.
Gainesville opens the season at the Summit Conference Tournament Mar. 15-16.
“My expectations for this team are to be competitive and I expect us to be a contender in each game we play,” Comstock said. “Of course, with a baseball team as good as ours, we hope to match their energy. They are a fun group of girls and I am looking to improve every game we play.”
