Skyline softball is in the midst of a youth movement as graduation and injuries have hit the program hard.
“Our whole defense will look different,” Skyline head coach Shawna Bybee said. “With five seniors graduating last year and two returners out for the season, we are fresh and will compete across all positions to see what works the best.”
Senior Chayla Tuning, junior Autumn Baldwin and sophomore Tymber Pinon are returning starters and team leaders.
Bybee on Tuning: “Lots of game experience and practice experience with me. Also knows how to compete in the postseason.”
Bybee on Baldwin: “Very talented bat and base running. She will be a vocal leader for my underclassman.”
Bybee on Pinon: “Silent leader. She is very mature and very competitive. (She) has high expectations for her team and herself.”
An injury to pitcher Makenna Shockley has Bybee turning to freshman Kimber Henderson and Pinon in the circle at pitcher.
Raegan Lewis will be behind the plate at catcher.
The young Lady Tigers will have to learn quickly to compete in a tough Mid-Lakes Conference and district.
“I think a rebuilding year for any team is hard. You have to learn from your mistakes quicker than an experienced team, I hope they bounce back fast,” Bybee said. “My expectations for every season will never change, rebuild year or not. My expectation is to continue to grow mentally and physically so we are ready to fight in the postseason. We got second place to Fair Grove last year and we don’t want to take that second-place trophy back home again.”
Skyline opens the season on Mar. 15 against Versailles at Macks Creek.
