Cows out, pigskin in, the Ozarks Lunkers prep for last-minute home game

Saturday’s scheduled road game for the Ozarks Lunkers will now be played in Springfield after an issue with the arena in Kansas City where the Kansas City Goats play.

Wilson Logistics Arena is hosting a cattle show until Thursday, so the arena crew needs to get the dirt out and the football turf in.

“We’re shooting for all the dirt and everything to be gone by 7 a.m. on Friday morning and then we start rolling the turf out so by 5 p.m. on Friday we will have a complete football field,” said Ozark Empire Fairgrounds General Manager Casey Owen.

But this quick turnaround will cost the Lunkers a pretty penny.

“It’s obviously good to have a home game, ticket sales, things like that,” said Lunkers owner Mark Burgess. “There’s a huge amount of extra money having to be spent to do this, especially on a short notice.”

But that short notice will benefit fans with discounts on tickets, food, and drinks. All to catch the Lunkers’ bonus home game that looked like a plot of dirt not even 24 hours prior.

“We got cows down there right now that they are getting pictures of,” Burgess said. “This weekend we will have football players getting the same action.”

With quick work from arena staff, the Lunkers hope to change those moos into cheers.
