“I actually call it big ball golf,” said Les Harris who plays this new sport. “The balls are a lot bigger than a golf ball.”
The true name of this sport is Brett Golf, created by Brett Picotte.
“This is our second season at Phelps Grove Park,” Brett said.
It’s a concept similar to golf. The course has 6 holes and three rounds. The objective is to hit a 2 liter bottle.
Each player has their own ball and club, which Brett created.
“There’s plastic [at the head of the club] that comes [from] the side of a bucket of kitty litter, but you can bend it…it gives it some loft,” Brett said. “We have cloth [in the head]. A wood shaft. A wood piece up [in front of the head] to keep this more stable in the front.”
Brett golf is a sport anyone can play. Harris is in a wheelchair and spends the evenings playing with his family.
“When I saw this, I knew it was something I could get out and have really fun with,” Harris said. “And get a little exercise.”
People walking by often stop to give it a try.
“We get people asking us what we are doing all the time…actually had a few people play that have seen us and come and enjoyed it,” Harris said.
The group meet at Phelps Grove Park (Springfield, MO) every Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m. They are always looking to have more people join in on some Brett golf.
