Republic beats Webb City on late defensive stand

10-04_donjones_fb_001-2

Friday’s matchup between Webb City and Republic looked eerily similar to the two team’s last matchup in the Class 5 state semifinals from last season.

The result was also the same with the Tigers coming out on top 15-13.

Republic got what would prove to be a 22-yard game-winning field goal from Elijah Phirl with 11:12 left in the game.

On the final drive of the game, Webb City marched into the Republic red zone with under a minute left in the game. Last season, it was an interception by Republic when Webb City entered the red zone that ended the game. This season, it was a stand on 4th down. On fourth-and-three from the Republic nine, Webb City ran straight ahead and got nowhere to end the game and keep Republic unbeaten in COC West play.

Republic was dominant in most facets of the game with a 30:50 time of possession to 17:10 for Webb City. The Tigers also out-gained Webb City 410 to 259 yards.

Preston McCracken led the charge for Republic with 15 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown.

The win sets up a showdown with fellow unbeaten COC West team Carthage next week. The winner will have sole possession of first place in the conference.
