Galena has a new head coach but a familiar name to basketball fans in the Ozarks as Scott Brakebill takes over. Brakebill played for the Missouri State basketball program from 1998-2002. He also played professionally overseas from 2002-09. From 2010-14, Brakebill was the head coach of the Miller basketball program.

“I am excited for the opportunity to work with this group of boys,” Brakebill said. “They all got valuable minutes last year as freshman and sophomores at the varsity level, and now is the time to take the next step. This group has been anxious to prove they can win at this level, and I believe these guys have the tools to build the foundation of success for Galena Basketball moving forward. It has been 30 years to the season since Galena has won a district championship.”

Bobby Harris earned second-team all-conference honors in the SWCL as a sophomore last season. He was one of two underclassmen on the first or second team.

“Bobby has good instincts on the offensive end of the floor and has the ability to guard multiple positions on the defensive end,” Brakebill said. “He has improved in many areas and is looking to have a great season.”

Cody Jones also earned all-conference honors as a sophomore and returns.

“Cody has a unique ability to score the basketball,” Brakebill said. “He has already scored over 1000 varsity points in his first two high school seasons, and comes into his junior year stronger and faster. He plays the game hard and has a strong desire to help his team win more games this season.”

John Bailey (junior point guard), Jack Stephens (junior forward), Andru Foster (sophomore guard) and Jaxon Foster (sophomore guard) all return after each saw some time in the starting lineup last season.

Brakebill on Bailey: “John has spent countless hours in the gym to improve his overall game. He has also shown flashes of great leadership ability which we will need more of this season as he continues to develop into one of the areas better point guards.”

Brakebill on Stephens: “Jack has put in the extra work and dedication this offseason to transform his game. He plays strong in the post, and sees the floor well. He is in the best shape of his career, and he is determined to do whatever it takes to help his team win this season.”

Brakebill on Andru Foster: “Andru can guard the perimeter, handle the ball when needed, and score from multiple spots on the floor.”

Brakebill on Jaxon Foster: “Jaxon is a good rebounder from the guard position, can handle the ball under pressure, and knock down an open shot. Both Jaxon and Andru will be key components to this team, and I am looking forward to seeing them both grow throughout the season.”

Junior newcomer Jameson Brakebill will look to make an immediate impact.

“Jameson brings added size and a defensive presence that this team was missing last season,” Coach Brakebill said. “He loves the game and is excited to play with this great group of guys.”

Sophomores Alfredo Perez, Esiya Weeks, Billy Taylor and Brendan Reith return to the team after earning quality junior varsity minutes last season.

“The strength of this team must be our passion for the game and our desire to get better each day,” Brakebill said. “Defense, rebounding, and taking care of the ball (need to improve). This group is a year older and now must understand these three components are the most important aspect to any winning basketball team.”

Galena travels to Billings for a jamboree on Nov. 19 with Ava, Hollister and the host Wildcats. The Bears open the regular season Dec. 2-7 at the Dennis Cornish Classic in Lockwood.
