Glendale boys basketball experienced a tragic loss in the off-season with the passing of Amare Witham.
“Amare is one of the most talented kids to ever come through SPS and Glendale. His physical talents were obvious, but he had so much left to give. I miss Amare every day. We’ll never forget the kid he was on or off the court,” Glendale head coach Brian McTague said.
This season, the Falcons return Anthony Fletcher (senior guard), Zach Hawkins (junior guard), Jacan Seats (junior guard) and Mar’Kel Houston (sophomore forward).
Houston led the returning group in scoring at 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. Fletcher was just behind him at 9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Seats scored 4.3 points per game. Hawkins added in 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.
Newcomers to watch will be Kam Richardson (junior forward), Sylijah Davis (sophomore guard), Joelle Rover (sophomore guard) and Elias Stainback (sophomore guard).
“Our strength is in our balance. We need to understand that everyone’s time will come if we share the ball and make the right play on each possession,” McTague said. “We need varsity experience. We need to get used to the speed and physicality quickly.”
Glendale will jamboree at Logan-Rogersville on Nov. 21 with the host Wildcats and Republic. The Falcons open the regular season Dec. 4-7 at the Willard Basketball Classic.
“We have competitive kids that care,” McTague said. “I want to see them lay it on the line every night.”
