Marshfield wrestling will have plenty of youth on both sides with plenty of state qualifiers returning as leaders

GIRLS TEAM

The Marshfield girls wrestling program has big goals this season.

State championship goals.

“A team state championship is our number one goal for the season,” Marshfield girls wrestling coach Adam Wright said. “Being so close to a team trophy last year is definitely a motivation for our entire team. However, we try not to dwell on past results and focus more on our current goals. We try to stress that outcomes will take care of themselves if you focus on the process. We focus on clearly defining our process of reaching a state championship and we have a core group of wrestlers that have really bought into that process and have put in a lot of hard work in the offseason.”

Marshfield finished 4.5 points away from earning a state trophy last season.

This season, Wright expects 20-25 wrestlers on the roster.

Sarah Wilson is the top returning placer. She took fourth at 145 pounds last season as a freshman.

“Her freshman success came from experience, work ethic and attention to the psychological aspect of the sport,” Wright said. “Sarah comes from a wrestling family and has been in a wrestling room most of her life, so she came into the room as a freshman with probably just as much or more mat time then our seniors. Secondly, she has great work ethic and puts in tons of time and effort in the weight room, and on the wrestling mat. Probably the most important element though was her attention to the mental side of wrestling. We do mindset lessons as part of our practice routine, and she has bought into that system. There are a few matches that come to mind last season where you could see her practicing mindset techniques that we teach, and they paid dividends in those matches especially at districts and state.”

She will be at 155 pounds this season.

Gracelynn Bull placed sixth at 190 pounds as a sophomore.

“We expect Gracelyn to have a stellar junior season,” Wright said. “She was a first-year wrestler last season when she placed sixth, so we expect her to take a big leap this year in the technical side of the sport. She is a very athletic and powerful wrestler that has put in a lot of time in the weight room and wrestling room this offseason. Her dedication and leadership are going to be very important to our team this season.”
Bull weighed 165 last season when she placed at 190. This season she will be wrestling at her true weight class of 170.

Carlynn Mynatt was one win short of a state medal at 115 pounds as a freshman.

“Carlynn is a fierce competitor and coming up short of a state medal will be a constant motivator to her,” Wright said. “She did a great job of not dwelling on a disappointing state tournament but instead using the experience to learn and grow. She trusts the process and wrestled a lot this spring and summer to prepare herself to reach her goals.”

Mynatt will be in the 110 to 120-pound range this season.

Other returning wrestlers include Bayleigh Cruise (junior, 100-105), Graclyn Hursh (sophomore, 110-115), Payton Boyce (sophomore, 130-135), Alyx Keifert (senior, 130-140) and Aby Spencer (145).

“Bayleigh Cruise, Graclyn Hursh, Payton Boyce, Alyx Keifert and Aby Spencer have all put in some off-season work and I expect them to do big things if they trust the process and fully commit themselves this season,” Wright said. “However, Carlynn Mynatt, Sarah Wilson and Gracelyn Bull are the three that stand out the most. They dedicated themselves this summer to get stronger, faster and more powerful while also finding many outside opportunities/camps to attend and improve their wrestling skills.”

There is a large group of newcomers who will vie for varsity mat time.

Kaylee Cantrell (junior, 235), Haven Maddeaux (sophomore, 120-130), Jasmine Cody (sophomore, 140-155), Jayda Braden (sophomore, 130-135) and Saquiyah Francois (junior, 235) are among the non-freshmen newcomers.

The freshman class includes Paige Spencer (120-125), Adeline Swanguarim (125-130), Simone Mahoney (125-130), Ruby Bonner (120-125), Jordyn Larimore (115-120), Addison Asher (135), Emma Morrison (135-140), Nati Tomanek (140-155), Rolanda Francois (190), Alexis Kaderly (140), Aubrey Mondragon (130-135) and Alayna Murch (145-155).

Tomanek and Rolanda Francois have USA Wrestling experience and both placed top high several youth wrestling tournaments last season.

“Depth will be a big strength of ours. With possibly 25 girls on our roster we will be able to fill most if not all weight classes,” Wright said. “We may not be the most experienced team, but we will have a good mix of high level wrestlers in our lineup alongside girls that are good competitors and are eager to learn. I think it will make for a solid team dynamic.”

BOYS TEAM

The Marshfield boys program expects around 40 wrestlers this season including three returning state qualifiers.

Tanner Davidson is a two-time state medalist and three-time state qualifier. He placed sixth at 138 pounds last season.

“Tanner has been a leader since he stepped into the room his freshman year,” Marshfield head coach Matt Holt said. “His voice has been a constant and it will be needed this year with a team that will start several sophomores.”

Davidson will wrestle either 150 or 157 pounds.

Mac Mohnen qualified for state at 126 pounds last season as a freshman.

“Mac is extremely athletic and strong for any age but especially for a freshman. He had come up the previous three years in our youth program and had a very good understanding of what it is we try to accomplish during the course of a match and each day in practice,” Holt said. “He is even bigger and stronger. He practices every day with Tanner now that he is up to his size.”

Mohnen will be either 138 or 144 pounds.

Tyce Jones is a two-time state qualifier entering his senior season. He is chasing his first medal this season.

“Tyce is now a two-time state qualifier, and I expect for him to get onto the medal stand this season,” Holt said. “He is a great athlete that did not have a bunch of wrestling experience prior to high school. His growth as a wrestler jumps tremendously every year and I expect the same to occur this year.”

Johnathan McGlynn (sophomore, 120-126), Ethan Burt (sophomore, 126-132), Takoda Gritts (junior, 138-144), Anthony Macrelli (sophomore, 157-165), Carter Pruitt (senior, 215-285) and Austin Croy (junior, 285) are returning wrestlers.

Holt on Burt: “Ethan Burt had a great summer season winning a lot of dual matches for us.”

Holt on Gritts: “Takoda Gritts will be a three-time starter that has come close to qualifying for the state tournament in the past. He is at everything and is one of our leaders in the room.”

Holt on Macrelli: “Anthony Macrelli had a lot of success in youth and won a lot of varsity matches last season in a tough weight class for freshman.”

Holt on McGlynn: “Johnathan McGlynn had some wins last season over some state qualifiers.”

Ben Baker (sophomore, 113-120), Connor Johnson (sophomore, 144-150), Devan Aguirre (junior, 165-175), Malaki Timmon (senior, 190-215) and Ryley Steimel (sophomore, 190) will push for varsity mat time.

Johnson was a USA Youth State qualifier. Steimel was a USA Youth State medalist. Aguirre had multiple varsity matches last season.

The freshmen include Caleb Bull, Logan Compton and Brodie Perkins. Bull is a multiple-time USA Youth State qualifier. Compton was a USA Youth State medalist last year. Perkins has multiple state medals at the youth level.

“We will be young but this roster has a lot of experience prior to coming to the HS. They have also had a lot of success at the Youth level,” Holt said. “We need to get everyone into their desired weight classes and our goals will be the same as always; win 75% of our duals and finish top three in all tournaments.”
