MSU’s King wins Valley Freshman of the Week

ST. LOUIS – Missouri State guard Zaxton King (Fr., Lawrence, Kan.) was named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday (Jan. 13) after his efforts in recent games against UIC and Southern Illinois.

King helped ignite MSU’s comeback efforts at Carbondale on Saturday, scoring seven points in the span of two-and-a-half minutes late in regulation to help the Bears erase a 13-point second-half deficit and force overtime. King finished with a career-high 23 points against SIU on 8-of-16 field goals, 4-of-9 threes, and 5 rebounds.

Earlier in the week, he posted a team-high 17 points against UIC at Great Southern Bank Arena, connecting on 6-of-10 field goals and 3-of-6 shots from beyond the arc.

King led all MVC freshman last week in scoring at 20.0 points per game which ranked eighth nationally among all Division I freshmen in that span.

Also honored by the league on Monday were Northern Iowa’s Trey Campbell (Player of the Week) and Belmont’s Carter Whitt (Newcomer of the Week).

The Bears are back at home Wednesday for a 6 p.m. rematch against Southern Illinois at Great Southern Bank Arena. The first 500 fans receive a Bears’ scarf, courtesy of Great Southern Bank. The fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recipients will also be recognized at halftime.
