Athlete of the Week: Kylee Cole, Aurora girls basketball

Like many kids moving to a new school Aurora all-state senior Kylee Cole remembers the uncertainty she felt when she made the jump from East Newton in tenth grade. But those feelings quickly gave way to comfort. “When I was at East Newton it was only me as a freshman,” said Kylee, a senior on the girls basketball team. “When I came here I had five sophomores.”

She and the Lady Houns’ class of 2025 quickly formed the core of something special. Now they’re on a mission to win their third straight district title this year. “They really enjoy each other,” said Jason Cole, Aurora’s head coach and Kylee’s dad. “We’ve got the five seniors there. We have a lot of team unity. Makes it fun for her obviously and makes it fun for me as well.”

Kylee tries to be a threat to score from every area on the court. “My biggest thing was learning how to go up and be strong with the ball,” Kylee said. “My in-the-paint shooting.”

But if all else fails she brings something else that never goes into a slump. “I feel like we play the best with energy,” Kylee said. “So when I have energy other people feed off that. And I want to be that for somebody. I want to be their energy source. If they’re not playing the best. I want to be there like, ‘Hey you’re good. Pick yourself up.’ I want to be that for someone.”

She’s someone who’s already helped lead this team to the state quarterfinals when Aurora pulled that off a year ago. Now Kylee hopes to lead them to a place no Lady Houn has gone before. “It would be amazing,” Kylee said. “That’s what we’ve been working for. It would be the first Final Four in program history. So I think that’s what we want to do. We want to do something big.”

She’s gone from the new kid in class to setting a new standard on the court.
