The Norwood girls basketball team won a total of two games Autumn Gunter’s freshman year.
“It was awful, we were so beat down,” the four-year starter said.
It’s been up from there. Make it three consecutive final four appearances.
“We worked like no other team has ever worked,” Gunter said.
There is proof of the work being put in by the All-State senior.
“She hits big shots for us always has and she makes big free throws for us too,” said Norwood Head Girls Basketball Coach Wayne Jessen.
As her game has improved, so has her leadership for the Lady Pirates.
“Sometimes they don’t appreciate it very much, but honestly I try my best to push them and just try to make everything work,” Gunter said. “Sometimes I’ll be like ‘hey it’s okay I’ll take the blame that’s my fault’.”
If anyone knows how to pick themselves up best, it’s Autumn.
“I’m definitely my worst critic,” Autumn said. “So I’ll get down on myself and then after a while, I’m like ‘no Autumn it’s a team sport’. Just because you’re not doing good doesn’t mean that you still can’t win this by getting good assist, get good steals, good lockdown defense.”
And like Coach Jessen said… “When she gets on a roll she’s hard to stop.”
But unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end.
“I hate that this is my last year, I would go back every year if I could,” Autumn said.
For Autumn it will come to an end where most teams strive to be, the final four.
