SPRINGFIELD – Tyler Charlton took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for the second time in his career and Missouri State slugged three home runs on the way to a 9-2 victory over SIUE Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.

Charlton (3-1) posted career highs of seven innings and eight strikeouts in helping the Bears (7-11) to their third series victory of the season, giving up just two hits on the day.

Jake McCutcheon hit his fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the first to get things started for MoState, and the Bears broke the game open with a four-run third.

Curry Sutherland began the third with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch, Caden Bogenpohl walked (extending his reached base streak to 31 games) and scored on a Nick Rodriguez double, and Taeg Gollert added a two-run homer for a 5-0 lead.

Logan Fyffe hit a sac fly in the fourth inning and Sutherland blasted a solo homer in the sixth to make it 7-0.

The Cougars (6-12) broke up Charlton’s no-hit bid with two out in the seventh thanks to a solo home run and followed that with a walk and RBI double for a 7-2 score.

MoState countered with Gollert RBI single and RBI walk from Carter Bergman in the bottom half for the 9-2 final.

Garrett Ferguson pitched a scoreless eighth and Sutherland struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth in addition to reaching base safely three times.

The Bears are on the road Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game at Arkansas State before returning home March 21-23 to open the Missouri Valley Conference schedule against Bradley.
