Most freshmen find it difficult to compete for championships at the state level.

Thomas Jefferson’s Will Twiss is not most freshmen.

“I just know that God has done so much for me. He knows my talent and I know my talent that coming into this race that I the chance to go out and win it. I knew my potential and knew I could show out,” Twiss said.

Twiss came into the race with the top seed and a plan.

“Yesterday (Dora’s) Daniel (Tomlinson) went out and surprised everyone in the field and PR’ed by 10 seconds in the mile and got second almost winning it, so I knew he was going to be big competition today,” Twiss said. “I knew I needed to take it out harder than they wanted to go and right as those last two laps hit, I needed to kick it in so it takes away from their kick.”

Twiss led at every quarter-mile mark throughout the race and threw down a 1:01.55 lap to pull away for the win in a time of 9:45.87. That beat Faith Christian sophomore Isaiah Wilson’s time of 9:48.27. Tomlinson finished in a time of 9:50.48.

Twiss has long been inspired by his older brother, but he was ready for the running community to know his name.

“(My brother) is the guy who got me here today,” Twiss said. “I had always been in brother’s shadow. I decided I wanted to go make a name for myself and show the world who Will Twiss is and that is what I did today.”

As a team, Thomas Jefferson placed fourth overall as a team.
