The area brought home 37 all-state finishes in Class 5 led by Joplin’s eight total all-state finishes with six boys medals and two girls medals.
The Joplin boys used those six all-state finishes to score 46 points as a team to finish second behind team state champion Rock Bridge.
Donovyn Fowler was the star of the meet for Joplin winning gold in the triple jump on Friday and the long jump on Saturday.
On Friday, Fowler posted a jump of 48’11.5 on his final preliminary attempt of the triple jump competition, which was enough to win the event. He bettered it in finals going 49’8.25 to win the triple jump title by more than a foot. It was just 0.01 meters short of his season-best leap. He finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation in the triple jump according to MileSplit.
Fowler wasn’t done. Saturday’s long jump competition was more of a battle. Fowler jumped 24’3.75 on his second jump of the competition. It looked like it may hold up until the Lee’s Summit Joshua Manning went 24’5.75 on his second to last jump of the competition.
Fowler responded like champions do with a huge leap of 25’3.25. That mark won him the competition and earned him the No. 6 spot in the national rankings.

Teammate Donovahn Watkins joined Fowler as a state champion winning the shot put with a throw of 61’11.5. Watkins opened up with a contest-leading throw of 59’2.75. That led until Lee’s Summit West’s E’lan Moore threw 60’8.5 on his final throw of prelims.
Just like Fowler, Watkins responded with a championship effort. He stepped into the ring right after Moore and threw a 61’11.5 to close out the prelim throws. That effort held up as the event-winning throw. That throw stands up as the No. 37 mark in the nation according to MileSplit.
Hobbs Campbell was a big contributor to the effort for Joplin with a runner-up finish in the 1600 (4:12.19) and a fifth-place finish in the 800 (1:56.88). He also ran a leg on Joplin’s fifth-place finishing 4×800 relay team.
Branson’s Colsen Conway captured the area’s only state championship on the track in Class 5 by winning the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.54.
Nixa found success in the throws with Koby Graham finishing runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 187’10 while teammate Casen Hammit finished fifth in the event with a throw of 173’8. Tony Perez finished sixth on Day 1 in the discus with a throw of 161’03.
Ozark also had three boys all-state finishers in Class 5 including Nolan Moeller (800), Peyton Ligon (high jump) and Ryan Dotson (javelin).
On the girls’ side, Lebanon’s Kelly Mack was the area’s top finisher in any event taking second-place in the discus with a throw of 135’6.
Kickapoo’s Taylor Mayo brought home three all-state finishes taking third in both the long jump (19’0.5) and triple jump (37’10.75) while running a leg on Kickapoo’s eighth-place finishing 4×200.
Parkview’s Lilah Genel (fourth in the 3200 and eighth in the 1600), Joplin’s Jennalee Dunn (fourth in the 1600 and seventh in the 800) and Branson’s Cali Essick (fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump) also earned multiple all-state finishes in Class 5.
