What is on the line in Week 9?

74-40
HSFB, Willow Springs Bears, Thayer Bobcats, Palenske Field, Willow Springs MO, October 14 2022, Ozark Sports Zone,

We have reached the final week of the regular season and there is still plenty to be decided both in the conference and district standings. We break it all down below.

CONFERENCE RACES

Ozark Conference – Camdenton sits alone atop the standings at 8-0 thanks to a win over Lebanon in Week 9. A Camdenton win over Glendale gives the Lakers an outright title. A Lebanon loss to Rolla gives Camdenton the conference title outright. A Camdenton loss and Lebanon win forges a shared title.

COC – Nixa and Carthage are tied atop the standings at 7-1. If both teams win, the conference title is split. If one team wins and one team loses, it the winner takes the conference title. If both teams lose and Joplin wins, it would be a three-way split of the title.

Big 8 East – Reeds Spring is 5-0 in conference and has clinched a share of the conference title. A win over Mt. Vernon on Friday would give the Wolves and unbeaten conference championship. A Reeds Spring loss to Mt. Vernon would give both Mt. Vernon and Reeds Spring one loss in conference.

Big 8 West – Seneca is 5-0 in conference. A win over Nevada on Friday gives Seneca the conference title outright. A loss by Lamar gives Seneca the conference title outright. A loss by Seneca and win by Lamar gives both teams one loss in conference.

Mid-Lakes Conference – Forsyth has won the Mid-Lakes Conference title with a 4-0 record.

SCA – Liberty is 6-0 in conference and has clinched at least a share of the conference title. Houston is 5-1 in conference. If Liberty beats Houston on Friday, the Eagles are the outright conference champions. If Houston wins, Liberty and Houston will both finish with one loss in conference.

Southwest Conference – Marionville is 5-0 with a game against Miller on Friday. If the Comets win, they are the outright conference champions. If Marionville loses and Ash Grove beats Sarcoxie, both would finish 5-1 in conference.

DISTRICT STANDINGS

The district standings are much more fluid on many levels than conference standings. The formula to figure out the point total for each team is complicated but boils down to essentially four things:

  1. Win or Loss
  2. Margin of victory (No more than +13 or -13)
  3. Strength of schedule
  4. Playing up classes

The specifics can be found on MSHSAA’s website.

Below you will find the current district standings with each team’s district point total after Week 6, Week 7 and Week 8. This will give you an idea of the trends for each team and also what is possible for total point moves each week.

The final consideration to remember is the head-to-head factor. If Team A and Team B played head-to-head and Team A won the regular season matchup and is DIRECTLY below the Team B in the district standings, then Team A would leap over Team B in the seedings. Key factors here besides the teams having to be DIRECTLY next to each other in the standings are two fold:

  1. You start at the top of the standings and work your way down when considering head-to-head
  2. A team can only be off-set one seedline meaning nobody can move up or down more than one seedline

In this scenario Team A lost to Team B and Team C. Team B lost to Team C. They are ranked 1-2-3 in the district standings in the order of A-B-C. Team A would drop to No. 2 and Team B would move up to No. 1. Team C would be stuck at No. 3 because Team A can’t drop two seedlines and Team B gets first chance to jump since they are No. 2.

With all that in mind, here is a look at what is on the line in each area district going into Week 9.

No. 7 Lee’s Summit West (2-6) vs. Liberty North (8-0)
No. 8 Ozark (2-6) vs. Nixa (7-1)

No. 7 Lee’s Summit West – Beat Lee’s Summit, Lost to Ray-Pec, Lee’s Summit North
No. 8 Ozark – Lost to Joplin, Week 9 vs. Nixa

OUR TAKE: At the top, Nixa and Lee’s Summit North are separated by just .12 points. I *think* if both teams win by the maximum margin (13 or more points) then Nixa should hold onto the top spot, but nothing is assured when the margin is this close. What is assured is that Nixa needs to win and win by at least 13 (the maximum benefit on margin of victory in the formula) to have the best chance at hanging on to the top seed.

Kickapoo will stay in third with a win. Ozark would only move up with a win over Nixa.

No. 4 Neosho – Beat Willard, Lost to Carthage, Webb City, Republic
No. 5 Willard – Lost to Neosho, Republic, Webb City; Week 9 vs. Carthage
No. 6 Parkview – NONE

OUR TAKE: This district is locked in with each team in the standings beating the team below it and Parkview having no common opponents. A Parkview win and Willard loss MIGHT move the the five and six seeds, but four points with both teams playing either in class or down is a lot to make up at this juncture.

No. 6 Monett (2-6) vs. Cassville (4-4)
No. 7 Hillcrest (0-8) vs. Parkview (0-8 – CLASS 5)

HEAD-TO-HEAD

No. 1 West Plains – Beat Bolivar
No. 2 Bolivar – Lost to West Plains
No. 3 Rogersville – Lost to Marshfield, McDonald County
No. 4 Marshfield – Beat Rogersville, Monett, Lost to McDonald County
No. 5 McDonald County – Beat Rogersville, Marshfield; Lost to Monett
No. 6 Monett – Beat McDonald County; Lost to Marshfield
No. 7 Hillcrest – Lost to Bolivar, West Plains

OUR TAKE: West Plains is the No. 1. That is locked in. The rest of this district could go many ways. Bolivar has moved into the No. 2 spot after sitting fifth just two weeks ago. The Liberators have a narrow lead and a tough matchup this week against Class 6 Kickapoo. The Liberators are playing two classes up, which will help greatly in trying to hold onto the No. 2 spot regardless of result.

The 3-4-5-6 spots in this district are the really interesting thing. Rogersville has lost to both teams below it in the rankings. If the Wildcats can pass Bolivar into second place, they will stay there. If everything stays the same in this district, West Plains and Bolivar would stay at Nos. 1 and 2. Marshfield would jump over Rogersville for No. 3 based on head-to-head result. McDonald County would then get jumped by Monett based on head-to-head results even though McDonald County beat both Rogersville and Marshfield. The reason for this is that Rogersville had already been offset by one seedline so McDonald County can’t move past them leaving the Mustangs vulnerable to being leaped by Monett. Hillcrest is an X-Factor. A Hornet win over Class 5 Parkview (0-8) and a Monett loss to Cassville (3-3) would probably be enough for Hillcrest to move to the No. 6 spot.

In sum, there is not a district in SWMO with more moving parts this Friday than this one. There is too much riding on every game involving teams two through seven to draw any concrete conclusions.

OUR TAKE: Nevada, Grandview and Carl Junction all have tough matchups this week with Carl Junction playing up one class. It is hard to say what the movement could be here, but spots three through five are wide open.

No. 2 Osage – NONE
No. 3 Buffalo – NONE

No. 5 Strafford – Beat Ava, Lost to Liberty
No. 6 Willow Springs – Lost to Mountain Grove, Liberty, Houston; Week 9 vs. Ava
No. 7 Doniphan – NONE

OUR TAKE: Houston hosts Liberty this week with the winner claiming the No. 1 seed in the district and the Week 10 bye that goes with it.

There is a lot that could happen here.

If Liberty beats Houston and Mountain Grove beats Thayer, Houston will slip to No. 3 due to the head-to-head loss to Mountain Grove pushing the Panthers to No. 2. Strafford would jump Ava for the No. 4 seed and would host Ava in the district quarterfinals.

If Houston beats Liberty, Houston would be No. 1 and Liberty would be No. 2. Ava would jump over Mountain Grove for the No. 3 spot with Mountain Grove going to No. 4 regardless of results on Friday for Ava and Mountain Grove due to Ava’s regular season win.

A Mountain Grove loss and Ava win should be enough to push Ava past Mountain Grove to No. 3, which would keep Houston at No. 2 with a loss to Liberty and keep Strafford at No. 5.

The biggest game in this district is the Liberty-Houston showdown. Everything starts there. The results of the Mountain Grove and Ava games will decide Nos. 2-5 should Houston lose to Liberty.

OUR TAKE: Lamar is the No. 1. Warsaw and Fair Grove could flip at Nos. 2 and 3 if Warsaw loses and Fair Grove wins though Warsaw will get a bonus for playing up a class. It is the same story for Skyline and Stockton, if one wins and the other loses, the winner will likely be No. 4.
