The El Dorado Springs boys and Miller girls brought home titles from the Gem City Classic on Saturday.
BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP: El Dorado Springs 58, Thomas Jefferson 53
El Dorado Springs used a big third quarter to pull in front of Thomas Jefferson on the way to a 58-53 win over Thomas Jefferson in the Gem City Classic title game.
Thomas Jefferson led 15-13 after one quarter and 33-25 at the half. The Bulldogs came out of the break on fire outscoring Thomas Jefferson 23-8 in the frame to take a 48-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Thomas Jefferson claimed a 12-10 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Landon Murry led El Dorado Springs with 19 points. Kuliath Kophart was just behind him at 14 points per game.
Jay Ball led all scorers with 23 points for Thomas Jefferson. He also pulled down 13 rebounds. Tyler Brouhard had 17 points for the Cavaliers.
GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP: Miller 44, Diamond 33
Miller shined defensively in a 44-33 win over host Diamond in the Gem City Classic title game. The Lady Cardinals held Diamond to single digits in three of the four quarters with Diamond scoring 10 points in the third quarter.
Miller led 10-9 after one quarter and 21-16 at the half. The Lady Cardinals extended the lead by three points 34-26 after three quarters before winning 44-33.
Loghann Leivan led Miller with 15 points. Ashlynn Helton also scored in double figures with 12 points. Grace Frazier led Diamond and all scorers with 18 points.
BOYS THIRD PLACE: Mt. Vernon 61, Galena 53
Mt. Vernon overcame an early deficit to come back and beat Galena 61-53 in the third place game.
Galena led 16-12 after one quarter. The Mt. Vernon defense stepped up in the second quarter with a 15-7 advantage to take a 27-23 lead into the break. The Mountaineers won the third quarter 19-18 and the fourth quarter 15-12.
Mt. Vernon had three players score in double figures led by Jarrett Zerby and his 19-point output. Clayton Turner (15) and Landon Jones (12) also scored in double figures.
Galena got 18 points from Cody Jones and 15 points from Cody Ellingsworth in the loss.
GIRLS THIRD PLACE: College Heights 47, East Newton 36
College Heights and East Newton played a tight game throughout the first three quarters in the third place game before the Lady Cougars pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 47-36 win.
East Newton carried a 13-9 advantage after the first quarter. College Heights allowed just five points by East Newton in the second quarter while scoring 14 to take a 23-18 lead into the break.
The Patriots came out of the break with a dominant defensive quarter earning a 10-3 advantage in the frame and a 28-26 advantage after three quarters.
In the fourth, College Heights’ offense went off for 21 points while holding East Newton to eight to pick up the win. Key in that final quarter was free throw shooting. The Lady Cougars went 9-for-10 from the free throw line ice the game.
Maddy Colin led College Heights with 15 points. Libby Fanning was just behind her with 12. Ava Lett added in nine points for College Heights.
BOYS CONSOLATION: Carthage JV 58, McAuley Catholic 28
GIRLS CONSOLATION: Greenfield 60, Sarcoxie 22
BOYS SEVENTH PLACE: Sarcoxie 62, Diamond 51
