Macks Creek overcomes slow start with big fourth quarter to win district title

Macks Creek used a big fourth quarter to erase a slow start on the way to a 42-32 win over Wheatland in the Class 1 District 5 championship game.

The Pirates trailed 10-3 after one quarter. They matched Wheatland 9-9 in the second quarter to go into the half trailing 19-12. Macks Creek cut the lead to 25-22 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, Macks Creek exploded for 20 points to just seven for Wheatland on the way to the win.

Most the fourth quarter damage was done at the free throw line where Macks Creek went 14-for-18.

Brooklyn Duggan led Macks Creek with 11 points. Eight of those points came at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Macks Creek was balanced on the scoresheet in the game with six different players scoring at least four points.

Chloe Pearson led Wheatland and all scorers with 16 points.

Macks Creek (23-5) advances to the Class 1 state sectional round where the Pirates will face Golden City (24-4) on Tuesday at 6 pm in Bolivar.
