Carthage upset Class 5 No. 2 Webb City 20-13 behind a strong defense over the final three quarters.
Webb City jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 9:15 mark of the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by Andrew Elwell.
Carthage tied the game with 3:17 left in the first quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run by Darrin Witt.
The Cardinals were quick to respond with a Gabe Johnson 67-yard touchdown run on the first play of the next drive to take a 13-7 lead after one quarter.
That would be all the Webb City offense would get.
Landyn Collins had a one-yard touchdown run with 10:07 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 13.
Brady Carlton hit Collins on a 42-yard touchdowns pass with 2:53 left in the half for what would prove to be the game-winning touchdown.
Carlton finished with 54 yards passing and 105 yards rushing. Collins had 107 yards rushing on 28 carries.
Johnson led Webb City with 10 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown.
Webb City drops to 5-2 in conference play. Carthage improves to 4-3. The Cardinals are now two games behind Nixa for the lead in the conference with two games to play. Next week, Webb City hosts Neosho while Carthage travels to Joplin.
