Head Coach Heather Stanford will take the reins of a 15-win Sparta volleyball team after two years coaching at Nixa junior high, as well as at Spirit Volleyball Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
“This season marks my first year leading the Sparta volleyball program, bringing new challenges and opportunities for growth,” said Stanford. “The girls initially felt anxious about the summer season, unsure of what to expect, but they’ve thrived with changes like weight training and conditioning after practices. Their progress as athletes has been remarkable, and I’m eager to see them continue to flourish as the season officially begins.”
Senior Caitlyn Norris “has made a tremendous impression with her unwavering drive to succeed,” said Coach Stanford. “From day one, Norris has shown resilience, never letting mistakes affect her game. She’s a constant motivator for her team, fostering momentum and positivity both on and off the court. As a setter and leader, she holds incredible potential for the upcoming season, and I’m eager to see her growth continue.”
Fellow senior Penny Hansen is a decorated athlete, earning awards playing middle in volleyball and also third in state in the shot put. “She promises to dominate this season with her athleticism,” said Stanford.
Hansen’s counterpart, senior Layne Forgey, is the team’s anticipated new libero. “Layne has been outstanding,” said Coach Stanford. “Her dedication over the summer has been commendable, stepping out of her comfort zone to earn her position and meet – and exceed – expectations.”
There are two junior stand-outs among the younger players: Izzy Campbell and Emmy Hightower, who will each serve as outside hitters this season. “Emmy stood out in our first summer tournament, because whenever she went in the game, she brought our team to life,” said Stanford. “Emmy’s experience in the position shines through, bringing energy and winning mentality to every game.” Izzy has transitioned from playing middle last year and “has the talent and drive to excel as an outside hitter,” per her coach. “Campbell approached me about changing her position early this summer season, stating that middle was not where she felt she wanted to be, and I am excited to give her the chance to play in the position that she has a passion for.”
Campbell’s position change leaves an open middle spot, and sophomore Claire Rains “has emerged as a standout contender,” said Coach Stanford. “Claire’s adaptability and coachability have been evident as she tackles new plays and rotations with enthusiasm. Her potential is clear every time she takes the court, and I’m confident she’ll develop into an exceptional player.”
Sparta will also introduce a new event for the Lady Trojans this year, their first “Serve-A-Thon.” Each player will serve 100 volleyballs and track their successes for fundraising. “Participants can gather donations per serve or through flat contributions,” said Coach Stanford. “It’s a fun way to hone skills while supporting our program’s future – a first for volleyball in Sparta, and I think it’ll be a hit,” she said.
Sparta will kick off their season with a jamboree on Tuesday, August 27 at Sparta High School. Details are still being finalized. “We anticipate continuing our tradition with teams like Conway, Blue Eye, and Billings,” said Stanford.
Coach Stanford may be new, but she’s clear on her objectives for her team. “My goal for the program this year is to maintain Sparta’s winning record of the past two years and to emphasize fundamental skills. By ensuring all players adopt consistent technique and form, we can think, play, and win cohesively as a team.”
Following the jamboree, Sparta will participate in the Stockton Invitational Tournament. Their first home game is on September 12 vs. Gainesville.
