Morris Jenkins returns for his 34th year of coaching back at Gainesville after a stint in the district from 2014 through 2022.
“I worked in the Gainesville district from 2014-2022 and retired following the 2021-22 school year,” Jenkins said. “The position came open in early June, and I was offered the opportunity of my current job. Having worked in the district previously, the fact that I really enjoyed my time in the district and community during that period played a huge role in my decision to take the position.”
Four players return from a team that went 18-10 last season.
That quartet includes Grant Leeker (junior guard/forward), Owen Donley (junior guard), Hunter Luna (senior forward) and Dawson Hewett (junior guard/forward).
“These are the returning players who were a part of last season’s varsity team,” Jenkins said. “Grant was a full-time starter, while Owen was a part-time starter. Hunter was a key reserve who backed up at the forward position. Dawson was a key player on a successful JV team and also received some limited varsity time and was a part of the varsity success. While my time with them has been limited, I have been very encouraged by the qualities and ability I see in this group. They all have valuable experience that will be instrumental in their increased roles this season.”
Leeker led that group in scoring with 6.2 points per game and 2.4 rebounds. Donley scored 5.1 points per game with 2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Luna contributed 2.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
The roster will be filled out by a mix of former JV players and freshmen.
“There are several players who are capable of being in the mix for the remaining varsity spots,” Jenkins said. “The JV and 8th grade teams both had solid seasons last year and some of these players will have the opportunity to earn varsity minutes. I feel like there are some good athletes with the ability to step up and contribute.”
Gainesville opens the season Dec. 2-7 at the Forsyth Tournament. The Bulldogs will look to use the early season practices and games to grow as a team with an eye on peaking in February.
“Due to the timing of me taking the position we haven’t had much time together in an organized setting,” Jenkins said. “However, I am somewhat familiar with our players and have seen a lot of good qualities in them first and foremost as young men, but also as basketball players and am confident we can put a solid, competitive team on the floor. Team first attitude and great effort will be emphasized daily. We must commit to defense, rebounding and willingness to execute to team strengths. Our hope is that when others see our team play they see a group that works well together, is respectful to all, and our play reflects enthusiasm for what we are doing. We hope to improve throughout the season and be playing our best ball in February.”
