Missouri State head baseball coach Keith Guttin has been suspended for the Bears’ next three games by the NCAA and Missouri Valley Conference for a failure to comply with standard post-ejection protocol.
UPDATE:
Missouri Valley Conference Assistant Commissioner for Communications Ryan Davis explains why Guttin was suspended.
“NCAA playing rule says that after an ejection, the coach cannot be within sight or sound of the field. Â Coach Guttin remained within sight, which is an automatic 3-game suspension under NCAA baseball playing rules. Â He did not communicate with his players or the dugout, he just remained within sight of the field.”
Guttin, who was ejected in the third inning of MSU’s 9-5 win over Evansville on Saturday, will be forced to miss the Bears’ (30-13, 11-0 MVC) Tuesday (May 2) game at Kansas, as well as the first two games of their MVC series at Southern Illinois (May 5-7).
MSU assistant coach Paul Evans has been designated as acting head coach in Guttin’s absence, as the No. 16 Bears will ride a nine-game win streak into Tuesday’s game in Lawrence.
