Hillcrest and Marshfield went 11 innings last night in what ended up being one of the wilder games of the young season. The Hornets trailed 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh and walked off in the 11th on a two-out single by Caitlyn Blackburn, scoring Mariah Lee.
A leadoff double from Hillcrest's Hannah Holland and a single from Sarah Hale sparked a three-run rally in the seventh inning that forced extras.
Holland scored on a Brooke Blair RBI groundout to make it 9-7. Hale scored on a wild pitch with two outs and Haley Frillman tied it 9-9 on an RBI single by Madison Shafferkoetter.
Marshfield trailed 3-0 after two innings and led 7-3 in the fourth.
The two teams combined for 30 hits and 10 starters between the sides had at least two hits.
Hillcrest's Lydia Conlon was 3-5 with two RBIs. Jessica Ganzer knocked in three runs for the Hornets. Blackburn pitched all 11 innings and earned the win, throwing 164 pitches and striking out eight. Only four runs against were earned.
Marshfield's Shelby Choate went 4-6 with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Catcher Kennedy Deckard was 3-6 with a double and two RBIs.
Hillcrest is now 4-2, matching their win total from 2015 and surpassing their win total from 2014. The Hornets haven't finished above .500 this decade, with their best record coming in at 13-13 in 2012. They host Ava on Thursday with a potential 5-2 start on the line. Keep an eye on that game.
Marshfield is off to a good 4-3 start. The Jays host Hollister on Thursday.
