Mediacom Ice Park offers figure skating camps even during the summer, so it's a great way to escape the heat. Jolyn Hecht is the Park's Figure Skating director. Assuming you can glide, one of the most important moves in figure skating is spinning in a circle.
Once that's down, Spirals are up next. These are different from football spirals. This is where you glide with one foot on the ice and one leg in the air. Your arms are also extended from your sides, like airplane wings.
"If you dive too much you crash your air plane," Hecht says. "If your arms are too far back, you crash your air plane."
If you're having a hard time not crashing your air plane, you can practice against the baords. It goes without saying that flexibility is a huge part of this sport. That's not something you can fix in one afternoon, but it does improve with work.
